Does it cost anything?
No. Creating an account, building sets, creating classes and assigning homework are all free, and students can do their homework on a free account.
Students should know one thing about free accounts: they have lives. A wrong answer costs a life, and when they run out they can watch a short ad to refill them and carry on, or upgrade to Premium for unlimited lives. Their homework progress is saved either way.
What do students need?
A free Chatterbox account and either a web browser (app.chatterboxlabs.io) or the Chatterbox app for iPhone or Android. Their homework and progress are the same on both. Pronunciation and speaking exercises use the microphone.
Which languages can I teach?
Classrooms work with Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and English, in any pairing. For example, you can teach Spanish to English speakers, or English to Spanish speakers.
Can younger students use it?
Our Privacy Policy doesn't allow us to knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verified parental consent. If your students are under 13, please email us before using Chatterbox with them.
What do I see about my students?
For your classes only, you see each student's display name and avatar, when they joined, and their homework progress: what they've finished, their scores, time spent, when they were last active and the words they find hardest. You never see their email addresses, and you can't see anything about classes you don't teach.
If I use Claude or ChatGPT, what does it see?
Your assistant only sees what Chatterbox returns when you ask it to do something, such as a class roster by display name or homework results. Chatterbox never receives your conversations with the assistant. The details are in the AI connectors section of our Privacy Policy.
Can I remove my data?
Yes. You can remove a student, withdraw an assignment or delete a class at any time. Removing a class or assignment also deletes the homework results in it. To delete your account and everything in it, email grant@chatterboxlabs.io.
Do I need an AI assistant?
No. Everything in this guide works in the web app on its own. An assistant is an optional extra for planning faster and adding more kinds of exercise. See Plan with Claude or ChatGPT.
